A Christmas Message

i was at youth last friday (the 3rd Nov) and i was eating a pretzel when suddenly i realised that it was in the shape of a star...

you know its christmas when all the companies start making christmassy things, even when its still a massive 7 weeks until christmas. everybody is going way over the top, just trying to make heaps of excess money off the festivities and such, turning christmas into some massive pile of commercialistic rubbash.

last time i checked, christmas wasnt about how much money you made or how many presents you got, it was about giving and generosity and JESUS.

so, i challenge you all, what can WE do to make christmas less commercial?

ps. i love nicole!

yeah, i tried posting yesterday too, but it wouldn't let me! Great post zaccy, we were talking about the TEAR catalogue in our small group on friday, and how it's a cool option instead of buying pointless gifts for the sake of it (i mean, intentional, lovingly made, or lovingly given gifts are great, but when it's a pointless routine, it's kinda lame!). so check out www.tear.org.au people! maybe you should do a spot/talk about your feelings on this issue, at youth group zac! top work mate

anyway, as a sort of response relevant to the above topic :P

all the people who go to church would probably know that every now and then we have what's called a "service service", where the night congregation go out into the community and go to people's houses and see if they need stuff done etc.
i was just thinking now that that would be a great way to get out into the community and of course there are so many needy people in frankston, in one way or another, even if they just need someone to talk to...and it would be a fantastic way to get out there and spread the word...but it definately sorta needs to be changed into something thats just a tad more youth-ish oriented

It's so great to see all you guys thinking about the effects of our culture on Christmas. Keep thinking and discussing this issue, it's a biggy! We should chat about it some more at IC too!

Ali

PS: The Tear catalogue is great, as Smason wrote! World Vision does something similar, but Tear is the best! (Basically Tear/World Vision have a system where we can buy useful things for people in the two-thirds world, as gifts for our friends and families- you can buy school supplies, goats, clean drinking water, education, business supplies, toilets, the possibilities are endless! Such a practical way to help people, instead of wasting our money and resources on buying things that aren't really needed!)

assuredly, i did not put that extra little p.s. on my post...i am sure it was somewhat in retaliation to my somewhat less than socially acceptable yet challenging-ish signature which was removed and replaced with the p.s. which is unfortunate... and i was hoping that i would be able to remove said addition but with the change of th eblog to a new format, all power over previous postings has been lost... which is also too bad
